Refund tracker

Refund Status

FreeTaxJapan's refund tracker follows the same reassuring rhythm as a package tracker, except the package is your tax refund and one checkpoint involves a highly trained tanuki.

Service overview

A straight-faced tracker with escalating honesty

The stages begin normally, then drift gently into the version of logistics we prefer to imagine governs national refund processing.

Animated progress stages

Where's my refund?

The tracker cycles through each official-sounding stage before arriving at approval. Some stages are more official-sounding than others.

  1. Return received by NTA

Your filing has entered the system and is sitting exactly where a reassuring progress tracker says it should.

  2. Being reviewed by tax officials

Routine review is underway. This is the most normal part of the journey, which is why we mention it so calmly.

  3. Your return is being transported by shinkansen to the processing center

A high-speed administrative transfer is in progress. Please imagine the paperwork arriving exactly on schedule.

  4. A trained tanuki is verifying your calculations

Final validation is being performed by a woodland specialist with a demonstrated respect for arithmetic.

  5. Refund approved!

The NTA, the train network, and the tanuki have all signed off. Your refund is cleared.

Return received by NTA

Your filing has entered the system and is sitting exactly where a reassuring progress tracker says it should.

Key detail

Return received

Once the NTA has your submission, the tracker starts immediately and signals that your paperwork has entered the machine.

Key detail

Under review

This is the calm middle period where tax officials review the filing and you try not to refresh the page every nine minutes.

Key detail

Refund approved

Once approved, the return has survived both bureaucracy and wildlife. At that point, optimism becomes technically defensible.

While the tracker advances

  • Keep your submitted return and bank account details handy in case you need to cross-check anything.
  • Avoid filing the same return again just because the tanuki phase feels emotionally ambiguous.
  • Use the amended return flow if you discover a real change after submission.
  • If you simply want reassurance, continue watching the progress bar with calm professional composure.
